life lessons from my dog

I heard recently some wise counsel urging husbands to make their wives their standard of beauty. And of course, vice versa.

At first I wondered if this were really possible but over the next couple weeks I realized it absolutely was.

Only one person who has met our dog has actually been completely honest. She looked at me a little hesitantly then said, “She’s funny-looking.” Well, of course! Chili’s a mutt with wonderful personality, but she’s still a mutt and thus shaped a little oddly. Nevertheless, over the years, she has won my heart with her unshakable love. Other dogs have passed before my eyes over the past six years but she’s the one whose appearance brings joy, so my eyes have adjusted. Other dogs’ bodies are too narrow, their legs too gangly, their faces snouts short and blunt. But Chili is perfect. My daily choice to study her only, to dwell on my love for her when I look on her and to feel the love she communicates has changed my opinions. My malformed mutt is perfect to me. She’s become my standard of dog-beauty.

What a great thing to do with our spouses as well. What a great way to rejoice in your wife or husband!

…rejoice in the wife of your youth, a lovely deer, a graceful doe. Let her breasts fill you at all times with delight; be intoxicated always in her love (Proverbs 5:18-19).

Enjoy life with the wife whom you love, all the days of your vain life that he has given you under the sun, because that is your portion in life and in your toil at which you toil under the sun (Ecclesiastes 9:9)
