As I write, I hear Slick cheering on the game of “Ultimate Bubble”, like Ultimate Frisbee but with a ball and with Bubbles as goals. He is in charge of the Bubbles for the kids’ camp here in southern France. To picture a Bubble, imagine a giant, clear balloon with a tube in the middle for the person. When someone is wearing one, it looks like a huge ball with feet. Okay, just look at the picture below!
In the final game of “Last Man Standing” with everyone against him, Slick knocks each kid head-over-heels down the hill. In that sliver of time just before one began to roll, his priceless expression caught Slick’s eye as a grand “whoop!” emerged from the bubble. There was fear in those eyes, but it was crowded out by anticipation and joy – the thrill that makes a person feel alive, knowing that something amazing about to happen. That “something” is new and different, and feels really dangerous, but at the same time we know that it is entirely safe.
It is not unlike that moment in time when we begin a new life united with Jesus or begin a new adventure with Him. It is different from anything we’ve ever experienced before, and feels very dangerous – to let someone else take charge of my life?! But in truth, because of Who is in charge, nothing could be safer…or more fulfilling.
